We just got back Monday 4/26. Still trying to adjust to reality (& textiles). We were in SXM (10th time) from 4/19-4/26/04. As always, everyday (but one) was spent at OB (CO section). We were absolutely amazed at how the beach had HUGELY recovered from the past erosion. Only one day was cloudy for just part of the day. No day rain at all! Sunday, 4/25 was particularly wonderful--just a slight breeze and low 80's temp. The beach was more crowded than in years past, but still plenty of room. Just get there early if you need an umbrella or lounge chair as they started to run out of them! The cruise crowd was the same, although they were met toward the start of the CO section with a group of CO'ers who had staked a flag that said "scum" along with some ground level signs in front of their chairs chastizing any cruise gawkers. The staff at Papagayo's and the store were their usual wonderful selves. Speaking of staffing, the security at the CO section is sooooo welcomed!! Not even one occasional perv walking/swimming around like in years past. In fact, some cruise guy was giving a woman a hard time, and the security was on him like white on rice. Oftentimes now the security will sit in elevated guard chairs. It is so much more relaxing when you you feel so safe. MANY more French visitors to the island than we remember in the past. Glad they have such a wonderful island so close to the US that we can share and enjoy too!! We again stayed at Le Flamboyant in Nettle Bay, and I'd say about 80% of the guests arrived on what I understand to be an almost daily nonstop flight from Paris. Many stores and restaurants on the French side gave $1=e1!! Nice for us Americans. Breakfast almost daily at Le Croissanterie in Marigot by the boat docks. Excellent as always! Still can't get over the vast improvements at the wharf in Marigot over the years. Jeez, now there is even a compact indoor two level mall!! But as always, our primary destination -- CO at OB -- was beyond fantastic. We are already trying to decide when to return. Remember to wear sunblock from the start, and watch out for goats along the road to OB!!!! |
